AT&T's third-quarter service revenue growth accelerated to 3.8%, or about 3% excluding the Lumen fiber acquisition. Service revenue growth had been bounded between 0%-2% over the past three years. Net debt ticked up sharply on spectrum purchases.
Following a period of investment, AT&T will hold a nationwide 5G wireless network with deep spectrum behind it and a fiber network capable of reaching around half of the US population. No carrier can match these assets.
Bears
The cost of maintaining dominance in the wireless industry by controlling spectrum has been costly. AT&T has spent more than $60 billion since 2020 on licenses with few prospects for incremental growth.
The wireless business contributes about 70% of AT&T’s revenue. The company is the third-largest US wireless carrier, connecting 75 million postpaid and 17 million prepaid phone customers. Fixed-line enterprise services, which account for about 13% of revenue, include internet access, private networking, security, voice, and wholesale network capacity. Residential services, about 12% of revenue, primarily consist of in-home broadband internet access, serving 16 million customers across a network footprint that reaches more than 60 million homes. AT&T also has a sizable presence in Mexico, with 23 million wireless customers, but this business only accounts for 3% of revenue.
