EU opens probes of Big Tech under new law

The European Union on Monday started investigations of Apple Inc. (AAPL), Google parent Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) (GOOG), and Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc. (META) under the recently implemented Digital Markets Act, which regulates large online platforms. The probes target Apple's and Google's app store rules, whether Google's search results prioritize its own services, and how Apple might make it difficult for users to pick browsers other than Safari, according to a report in Bloomberg. Meta's new Instagram and Facebook subscription fees will also come under scrutiny. In the U.S., Apple faces a sweeping antitrust lawsuit from the Justice Department, which is also suing Google for its search and online-advertising businesses.
