Coinbase Secures Restricted Dealer Registration in Canada
By Robb M. Stewart
Coinbase Global has been registered in Canada, a first for an international cryptocurrency exchange and part of the company's efforts to expand outside of its home U.S. market.
Coinbase said Thursday it has been registered as a restricted dealer by the Canadian Securities Administrators, the umbrella organization of provincial and territorial securities regulators that oversee the regulation of capital markets in the country.
It comes after Coinbase's formal launch in Canada last August and follows what the company said was months of work beginning in March 2023 when it signed a pre-registration undertaking committing to regulatory compliance.
Regulation is critical to the success of the crypto industry and for building trust, Coinbase Chief Policy Officer Faryar Shirzad said.
In the last year, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S. has gained licenses and registrations in France, Spain, Singapore, Italy, Ireland and the Netherlands.
CNBC earlier Thursday reported Coinbase had been granted a registration license in Canada.
