Keurig Plans Launch Of Compostable Coffee Pods
By Ben Glickman
Keurig Dr Pepper will debut plastic- and aluminum-free coffee pods alongside its new coffee-brewer, potentially the company's first compostable single-use pod.
The company said that its new K-Rounds pods would be plastic-free and is expected to be compostable. The company is still working through the certification process for compost but said the pods can be disposed of like coffee grounds.
The compostable pod was made by possible with licensed technology from European company Delica Switzerland.
Keurig Dr Pepper said that it would begin beta testing of the new Alta system, which will take the compostable pods, as early as this fall. The company plans to refine the product further before wide release of the Alta.
The compostable pod uses a plant-based coating licensed from Delica Switzerland in Europe, Keurig said. The company said its perpetual license to the Delica's expertise and technology includes the coating, which is used in Delica's CoffeeB system, and other application processes.
Keurig said the new pods would be able to brew espresso-based drinks and drip coffee and would work at hot and cold temperatures.
