Berkshire Hathaway reported stronger-than-expected operating profits in the first quarter. Berkshire earned a record $11.2 billion after taxes in the period, up 39% from the year-earlier period, as it reported results Saturday. On a per-share basis using the class A stock, Berkshire earned $7,796 from operations, excluding investment gains, well above the consensus estimate of $6,702 per share and up about 40% year over year.
