Company Report

Centene Aims to Lead in Government-Sponsored Plans

Centene aims to be a top provider of government-sponsored health plans. Although it has grown at a solid clip organically, the company also has made significant acquisitions—most notably WellCare in Medicare Advantage plans—to meet that goal. Technology investments to boost efficiency have helped Centene prosper in this relatively low-margin managed-care sector, as well.

Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls

Centene represents a countercyclical investment opportunity in managed care, as it can benefit from economic downturns through increasing enrollment in its Medicaid and individual exchange products.

Bears

Since the pandemic began, Medicaid rolls swelled, but as eligibility redeterminations have resumed, this Centene stronghold may continue to decline in the near future.
