Canada's Suncor Energy Says It's Responding to Cyber Security Incident — OPIS
Suncor Energy on Monday said it was responding to a cyber security incident that may have affected some transactions with customers and suppliers.
In an early Monday statement, the Canadian company did not disclose the nature of the incident or how long it had been going on, but said it had notified authorities and was working with "third-party experts to investigate and resolve the situation."
A social media notice posted by Petro-Canada, Suncor's retail and wholesale operation on Saturday indicated customers couldn't log in to its Petro-Points loyalty program from the company's app and website.
The company said it was not aware of any evidence of customer, supplier or employee data being compromised or misused.
Suncor's media office did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.
Suncor's operations include production and petroleum refining as well as the Petro-Canada retail and wholesale distribution networks.
The incident comes after the Canadian Center for Cyber Security on Wednesday issued an assessment of cyber threats facing the country's oil and gas industries. The center said ransomware attacks were "almost certainly the primary cyber threat to the reliable supply of oil and gas to Canadians."
The report also warned the industry was the target of state-sponsored cyber espionage and could be targeted by state-sponsored activity to disrupt operations in times of geopolitical tension, but said it was unlikely to be attacked by state-sponsored actors outside of hostilities.
