Telefonica Secures Spanish Soccer Broadcasting Rights
By Adria Calatayud
Telefonica said it has obtained rights to broadcast Spain's soccer league for the next three seasons, securing prized content for its streaming service.
The Spanish telecommunications company said Friday that it will pay 1.29 billion euros ($1.40 billion) in total for the package awarded in the latest tender of broadcasting rights of Liga Nacional de Futbol Profesional, the organizer of the Spanish soccer league. This is in line with the per-season cost of the previous rights award to Telefonica, it said.
Telefonica said the award covers the rights to air soccer matches for pay TV in the residential market in Spain for the second half of the 2024-25 season--from Jan. 20, 2025 onward--as well as the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons.
The award price amounts to EUR250 million for 2024-25, and EUR520 million for each of the following two seasons, the company said.
