The Week Ahead: 4th-Quarter Earnings Roll In

Jeremy Glaser: Earnings will keep trickling in during the holiday-shortened week. We will be looking for updates from more financial firms including Citigroup, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, American Express, and Morgan Stanley.

CSX reports on Tuesday. Our analyst Keith Schoonmaker will be looking for evidence that new chief James Foote can move the transformation of CSX forward following the passing of former CEO and noted railroad turnaround specialist Hunter Harrison in December.

Thursday will bring results from IBM. The firm posted solid results last quarter, sending shares higher as the market became more bullish on its ability to grow revenue. Andrew Lange, our analyst, also recently boosted his fair value estimate for IBM based on the view that the mainframe business can continue to provide financial stability as the firm focuses on higher growing strategic imperatives.

It's a reasonably quiet week on the data side, with industrial production, housing starts, and a handful of regional manufacturing gauges.
