Canada Retail Sales Rise 0.6% in June

By Robb M. Stewart

OTTAWA--Retail sales in Canada rose in June, a sixth straight monthly increase that was led by activity at general merchandise retailers.

Sales were up 0.6% from the previous month to a seasonally adjusted 74.28 billion Canadian dollars, the equivalent of about US$53.87 billion, Statistics Canada said Friday.

The rise was slightly stronger than the data agency's preliminary estimate sales rose 0.4% for the month, following an upwardly revised 1.1% increase in May.

Compared with a year earlier, retail sales in June were 5.2% higher.

The agency said an early look at receipts indicates sales declined 0.8% in July, though the figure was based on responses from 56.5% of retailers surveyed and will be revised.
