U.S. Services-Sector Activity Continued to Expand in July — ISM

By Jessica Coacci

U.S. services-sector activity continued to expand last month, a survey of managers found.

The Institute for Supply Management's purchasing managers index for services providers was 54.1 in July compared with 54 in June. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal expected a reading of 54.5. A reading above 50 suggests economic growth, while one below 50 indicates contraction.

The new orders index registered 57.2, higher than June's figure. The employment index returned to contraction territory after only one month of expansion.

The prices index registered above 70 for the fourth time in five months.

The supplier deliveries index continued to indicate slower performance, the survey said.

"Tariff impacts and the Middle East conflict continued to be mentioned by respondents, but much less frequently than in prior reports," said Steve Miller, chair of the ISM Services Business Survey Committee.
