Nikkei Stock Average Rises Above 50000 for First Time
By Kosaku Narioka
Japan's Nikkei Stock Average rises above the 50000 threshold for the first time, driven by a weaker yen and growing hopes that new Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will take steps to boost the economy.
The Nikkei Stock Average was up 2.0% at 50292.38 early Monday in Tokyo.
The Japanese yen was recently trading at 153.03 to the dollar, compared with around 147 before Takaichi won the leadership election of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party earlier this month.
Market expectations for the Bank of Japan's further rate increases have diminished since Takaichi's win despite persistently high inflation. The BOJ is scheduled to start a two-day policy meeting on Wednesday.
Takaichi favors government spending to strengthen Japan's manufacturing economy and food security, as well as investing in nuclear energy, artificial intelligence, and other high-tech sectors.
