Vale Ships First International Batch of CO2 Emission-Reducing Iron-Ore Briquettes
By Jeffrey T. Lewis
SÃO PAULO--Vale SA said Monday that it shipped its first cargo of iron-ore briquettes to the Netherlands for the first international test of the new premium product outside Brazil.
8,000 metric tons of the iron-ore briquettes were sent to test the impact of shipment on the product and their performance in a steel mill's blast furnace, the Brazilian iron miner said.
The briquettes are intended to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions from steelmaking by up to 10% by allowing steel alloy to be produced at lower temperatures while still achieving high mechanical strength.
