A distribution is a payout from an investment account such as a retirement plan or an IRA.

Distributions can be all at once (lump-sum), or spread out over time (periodic). Many rules apply to when you can (or must) take a distribution, how much is distributed and whether a distribution is taxed.

Mutual funds must pass any investment income, including capital gains, interest, and dividend income, to the fund’s investors. If the investment is held in a taxable account, these distributions are subject to taxation when it's paid.
