How does the new Morningstar Analyst rating compare with the old rating?

Under our new system, the funds and ETFs we believe have the best chance of outperforming the median fund in their category by the widest margin will receive a Gold rating. Actively managed funds must also convince us they have the potential to outperform the category benchmark after fees (and adjusting for risk). These are more challenging hurdles that we expect fewer funds will be able to overcome. Of those that do, however, you can be just as confident (if not more so) that Gold-rated funds represent our highest-conviction recommendations in a particular asset class.
