Europe Active ETFs Are Stepping Out of Their Comfort Zone
More conviction, more choice, but more complexity
Active ETF assets in Europe have doubled over the past two years, reaching EUR 62.4 billion by August 2025. Despite this impressive growth, active ETFs represent just 2.6% of total European ETF assets—far less than their share in the U.S. market.
Strong inflows, especially into equity and bond funds, are driving expansion. JP Morgan leads the market, followed by Fidelity and Pimco, with a surge in new product launches and minimal closures. Morningstar’s new classification methodology highlights that discretionary strategies dominate, while systematic approaches are gaining traction.
The European active ETF market is diversifying with more entrants and product variety, but it remains a niche segment compared to the U.S.
