Telecom Americas Industry Report: Q2 2026

How Will EchoStar's Spectrum Sale Impact the US Wireless Market in 2026?

EchoStar’s exit removes one of the more disruptive upside risks to U.S. telecom competition: the chance a well-capitalized outsider could acquire meaningful spectrum and build a new national network. AT&T benefits from added spectrum depth, while SpaceX gains a nationwide block that supports direct-to-device ambitions without clearly positioning it to challenge incumbent carriers in postpaid wireless. Cable operators, once seen as potential spectrum buyers, now look more firmly committed to the reseller model, relying on wholesale access rather than owned infrastructure.
