A few days ago, publisher Merriam-Webster announced that "justice" is its word of the year. Some might say a different word best defined the investing world in 2018: volatile.
Volatility maintained its grip on the market this week, too, as fears of economic slowdown, an overly hawkish stance by the Federal Reserve, and a possible partial government shutdown drove the S&P500 to 52-week lows intraday on Thursday. As of this writing, that benchmark is down more than 7% for the year.
