Selected Special Has Avoided The Worst of the Tech Wreck

This fund's attention to valuations is paying off in 2000.

Keeping an eye on valuations has helped keep Selected Special Shares (SLSSX) out of harm’s way in 2000.

With manager Elizabeth Bramwell focusing on valuations as well as growth rates here, this offering has avoided the brunt of the technology sector’s troubles in 2000. In addition to holding a relatively light tech stake for most of the year, Bramwell’s attention to valuations has also kept the fund away from some of the market’s most-speculative mid-cap fare. As a result, the fund weathered last spring’s tech wreck much better than its average peer: The fund posted a nearly 3% gain from March through May 2000, while its average mid-cap growth rival racked up a 19% loss during the same stretch.
