So much for a cruel summer.
The S&P 500 notched a 3.60% gain in July, its second-best monthly performance this year. And even after a rough stretch near month's end, the Nasdaq finished July up 2.15%. Healthcare and industrials stocks each shot up more than 6% for the month; even the worst-performing sector among Morningstar's indexes, consumer cyclicals, eked out a positive return.
