Amazon’s impact has material consequences that reach beyond the large growth Morningstar Category.

Amazon’s (AMZN) astronomical rise, an almost doubling of its share price in the past two years, has implications that reach beyond the large growth Morningstar Category. Jeff Bezos has expanded his reach from books in the early 2000s to unprecedented and far-reaching categories—most recently, a foray into grocery sales, and a continued decimation of traditional brick-and-mortar retailers. What does this mean for your fund?

Morgan Stanley Inst Growth (MSEQX), with a Morningstar Analyst Rating of Bronze, currently holds over 9% of its assets in Amazon. This has contributed to impressive performance in the year-to-date period, with returns exceeding 27% through June 30, landing the fund in the top percentile of the large growth category. The fund has held the position since 2004 and has reaped the benefits. In the year-to-date period, over 12% of its outperformance was due to this holding alone.
