Morningstar on the Market: Week through 09/22/00
Which stocks are hot, which stocks are not.
Poor earnings news from several companies hit the financial markets this week, and the results weren't pretty. Both old- and new-economy stocks suffered, though the latter half of the week saw a blow-up mainly among technology concerns, led by chipmaker Intel.
Meanwhile, government data released earlier this week indicated a slowdown in the economy, continuing to support beliefs that no more interest-rate hikes will occur this year. August building-permit applications fell 2.8% to 1.5 million, the lowest since December 1997, a sign that the housing market is softening.
