U.S. stocks made solid gains Tuesday, as all three primary U.S. benchmarks started 2017 with the same momentum seen toward the end of last year.

Despite a disappointing performance last week, U.S. indexes saw gains across most sectors Tuesday. The Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq look to finish the first day of the new year in the green--cyclical stocks as well as shares in the financials and energy sectors were leading the early gains after the opening bell.
