Akamai Acquires InterVu for $2.8 Billion

Streaming-media firm will provide the technology Akamai needs to speed up the Internet.

Akamai Technologies (AKAM) has announced its purchase of streaming-media technology firm InterVu (ITVU) for $2.8 billion in stock. This values InterVu at a 20% premium to its Friday closing price.

Though enjoying the spotlight of a hot market, InterVu doesn't sport the name recognition of competitors such as RealNetworks (RNWK) and Broadcast.com. Whereas those companies have parlayed a core technology business into content aggregation (in other words, a media portal), InterVu's technology has remained in the background, powering the streaming-media delivery of other companies.
