Morningstar 2013 ETF Invest Conference

Get investable ideas and engaging strategies from Morningstar analysts and other ETF experts.

Since our first ETF Invest conference in 2010, the exchange-traded fund industry has gone from less than $1 trillion in assets to $1.5 trillion, and a slew of new products has expanded the space from plain-vanilla index funds into more exotic areas. But how can investors navigate this increasingly complex landscape to build better portfolios and position themselves in today's uncertain market?

This year's conference, held Oct. 2-4 in Chicago, shed some light on ETF investors' best practices today, including panel discussions about new strategies for finding income, investing in emerging-markets funds, practical implications from the current macroeconomic landscape, the outlook for gold, and the basics behind factor investing.

Keynote speakers included the University of Chicago's Austan Goolsbee, Vanguard's Joe Davis, Research Affiliates' Rob Arnott, and PIMCO's Douglas Hodge.

For those who couldn't attend this year's event, Morningstar.com offered on-the-spot coverage and commentary, including analyst blogs on conference sessions and video interviews with the keynote presenters:

Breaking the link between price and portfolio weighting is why smart beta strategies outperform cap-weighted methods, says Research Affiliates' Rob Arnott.

Due diligence is required when examining the potential value of smart beta strategies, but there is room for innovation, particularly with fixed-income indexes, says Morningstar's Ben Johnson.

ETF Trade Winds Changing in Emerging Markets
Although passive market-cap-weighted ETF strategies remain popular in developing markets, they do have their drawbacks, but actively managed low-volatility and value strategies are gaining momentum, says Morningstar's Patty Oey.

More Than One Path to Emerging Markets
Low-volatility strategies, dividends, and style weightings are just some of the methods for emerging-market exposure, but the best approach is up for debate.
