Janus Venture Takes a Walk on the Mild Side
Manager Bales continues to tone down portfolio.
Janus Venture Fund (JAVTX) doesn't exactly look ravishing these days, but it's starting to leave the rough memory of its 2000 loss behind. Last year, the fund lost a gut-wrenching 45.8%--one of the fattest losses in the small-growth category that year. So far, the fund's 12% loss through July 23 isn't great, but it isn't terrible, either, given that Venture is a small-growth fund with an aggressive streak.
After last year's ugly performance, Janus moved former comanager Jonathan Coleman over to an assistant manager spot on the Janus Fund (JANSX), and skipper Will Bales set about retooling the portfolio to avoid any more losses like those incurred in 2000.
