My name is Tim and this is my first post (crowd: "Hi Tim"). I am currently in the military (deployed, but stationed in Germany), getting out in May 2011, and about 1 month away from being a first time father. I have been researching different vehicles for college savings for my not-yet-born and I'm completely lost. I've been over the 529's which my state (Missouri) doesn't offer, that I've been able to find. I've been over the Coverdell's but that doesn't seem good due to inflation/$2,000 per year cap, and the Gifts to Minors which if this child is anything like I was, definitely won't use the money for college. Is there anyone out there that can give me a better understanding/best avenue of approach for where to park this money? Since I'm in the military and been stationed overseas since 2003, I do all my banking/investing with USAA. I currently own 2 mutual funds ( USIFX /USSCX), with gains = approximately $2,500, that I've designated for the money until I figure out where I really want it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and I'm fully expecting to get bashed for putting the money into the mutual funds but try to take it a little easy on me, ok?
