    9. From Barron’s Q2 Mutual Fund Supplement, July 12, 2010

      Commentary

      Sat, 10 Jul 2010

See Lipper Category Q2 Performances HERE .   Pg L4: With record inflows into bond funds when the rates are low, bond fund buyers beware . If the rates rise due to Fed action (not imminent) or external shock (unpredictable), bond fund buyers will lose money. There is some safety in the following : individual bonds, bond ladders, diversified bond portfolios, funds with shorter maturities, floating rate funds and dividend paying quality stocks (INTC, KFT, MRK, VZ, etc). Claymore BulletShares Bond ETFs (series 2011-17) may be attractive. Jeffrey Gundlach of DLTNX and Thomas Attenberry of FPNIX are following strategies using mortgages and treasuries that may moderate the impact of rate rise.   Pg L8: There has been a study, refuted by John Rekenthaler and Don Phillips of M*, that 5* funds have underperformed their peers as well as average funds in the lost decade, 12/31/1999-12/31/2009; on the other hand, 1* funds did better; 72% of the fund flows in this period went into 4* and 5* funds. Fund rating is a big business. M* gets licensing fees when its star ratings are used in fund literature and ads. It is wise not to rely solely on any one criterion. [ M* may be providing more information on this in its articles ]   Pg L9: Antoine van Agtmael of Emerging Markets Management, Rajiv Jain of PICEX and Josephine Jimenez of VMDAX are interviewed. Many emerging markets have become correlated with the developed markets and one may have to go to the frontier markets to avoid correlation. Recent crisis was/is in the developed markets and many Ems fared fine. The view on BRICs is mixed. There are many details in the 3 pages.   Pg L16: New plays for oil and gas MLPs are available. There are 3 new MLP ETNS – AMJ, MLP, MLPN . There are some MLP ETFs too.
