  10. Portfolio Review

    Commentary

    Tue, 3 Aug 2010

Hello again.   It has been a long time since I have posted here at M*.   The last time was early to mid 2007.   My old screen name was jeownby and it is now Josiah.   Even back then I signed as Josiah.   I have been retired June 2007 from the company I worked with for 37 years but worked for two different contract companies from my retirement date until Feb 2009.   The WASCX and part of the Stable Value is in two different 401k accounts under those company’s accounts.   I almost didn’t even look at my accounts from June 2007 until late June / early July 2010.   The old account was diversified enough that it didn’t turn out to be a terrible thing except that I was 50% in Cash$ and Stable Value which weren’t earning much of anything, but not losing either.   I am 60 and pension + annuity from my long term company provides more than enough for my wife and I to live comfortably.     Recently I have diversified my Fixed Income holdings significantly by adding such funds as FSICX, FNMIX, PTRAX, FBAKX etc, but still have approx 30% in Conservative which to me is Cash$ accounts, Stable Value, and Short Term Bonds.   My target value for Conservative is 28% for which I arrived at the number saying if I had a 4% withdrawal rate covered for 7 years it would be 28%.   Guess you can tell that I still use a bucket approach.   I have started to use STBs (FFXSX and temporarily FFFAX ) as part of this amount (currently approx 8%.)   The Freedom Income Fund FFFAX will not be held long.   It is being used as a bridge to move funds from Stable Value to FFSXS for which a direct transfer was not allowed in my 401k.   Total Portfolio as of 08012010 Cash+SV - 21.93 FBAKX - 6.51 FCNKX - 3.24 FCPVX - 3.24 FCVSX - 3.15 FEIKX - 6.82 FFFAX - 4.70 FFXSX - 4.21 FICDX - 1.91 FIDKX - 3.69 FLPKX - 6.80 FNMIX - 3.13 FRIFX - 6.01 FSICX - 4.20 FVLKX - 6.58 PTRAX - 4.14 SSEMX - 3.26 TAVFX - 2.90 WASCX - 3.57   %Total - Equity/Fix Inc    50.63 /49.37 %Equity – US/Foreign/Other    57.65 / 32.15 / 10.20   %US Equity – LC/(MC+SC)    50.17 / 49.83 %Total – Conservative (Cash+SV+STB)    29.94 %Total – Other Fixed Income – 49.37 minus 29.94 equals 19.43   %Equity World Regions excluding US Canada - 31.34 Eu / UK - 22.70 Japan - 8.03 Latin Am - 6.40 Pac Rim - 25.33 Other - 6.20   Back when I was posting frequently I formed the habit of posting my portfolio when I had made or was working on significant changes.   Once upon a time when I was much more active I had almost 20% in various ETFs but right before retirement I needed to move funds back from BrokerageLink to regular 401k in order to make part of the funds which were After Tax contributions part of my retirement annuity.   There are some very good ETFs out there but they require much more attention than I have given during the past few years. Currently I feel pretty much on plan my current portfolio.   I may still be more conservative than necessary since I don’t need any of the funds but for now while I getting back into the stream a bit this feels about right. Your comments or questions are always appreciated. Josiah
