    6. 23, New Investor, Looking for solid Portfolio advice

      Commentary

      Mon, 17 May 2010

Firstly, let me state how appreciative I am for anyone who can take the time to help me out. I am a 23 year old male teacher. I just started full time. I envision a nice pension when i retire... so money invested in mutual funds are "extra".   I just started a Roth IRA and started with the 1. The AMCAP Fund ( AMCPX ) and 2. New World Fund (NEWFX). The AMCAP has more US equities, while the New World has more Non-US equities. From my understanding, my goals are inline with growth funds. Should i diversify my portfolio differently? Should I add more than just 2 funds? I was also interested in the EuroPacific, New Perspective, Captial World and Growth Fund, as lastly The Growth Fund of America. Which funds would you recommend to best diversify my account?   Secondly, I JUST started with American Funds, and from readings on these boards.. people seem to bash these funds. Can someone explain why there is bashing on AF and if its justified? If so... what family should i move my investments to.. and more importantly, why?   Lastly, I had to pay a 5.75% sale charge... How can i reduce this sale charge? Will 5.75% apply if i purchase online rather through my advisor/broker?   Thank you so much in advance again if you could lend me some guidance. I am very willing to learn and the reason i started with AF was due to my anxiousness to start as early as possible, and my broker only deals with AF. -Ted
