Although “moral hazard” is an insurance term, it applies to other government policies besides insurance. International studies show that people in countries with more generous and long-lasting unemployment compensation spend less time looking for jobs. In the United States, where unemployment compensation is less generous than in Western Europe, unemployed Americans spend more hours looking for work than do unemployed Europeans in countries with more generous unemployment compensation. People change their behavior in other ways when the government pays with the taxpayer money. After welfare became more readily available in the 1960s, unwed motherhood skyrocketed. The country is still paying the price for that — and the money is the least of it. Children raised by single mothers on welfare have far higher rates of crime, welfare, and other social pathology. --- Thomas Sowell Too Big To Fail is only the most recent example of Moral Hazard created by Big Government. Every "safety net" is exploited and abused by perfectly rational people who prefer others to work for their benefit than themselves working for others' benefit.
Is U.S. Now On Slippery Slope To Tyranny? By THOMAS SOWELL Posted 06/21/2010 06:13 PM ET View Enlarged Image When Adolf Hitler was building up the Nazi movement in the 1920s, leading up to his taking power in the 1930s, he deliberately sought to activate people who did not normally pay much attention to politics. Such people were a valuable addition to his political base, since they were particularly susceptible to Hitler's rhetoric and had far less basis for questioning his assumptions or his conclusions. "Useful idiots" was the term supposedly coined by V.I. Lenin to describe similarly unthinking supporters of his dictatorship in the Soviet Union. Put differently, a democracy needs informed citizens if it is to thrive, or ultimately even survive. In our times, American democracy is being dismantled, piece by piece, before our very eyes by the current administration in Washington, and few people seem to be concerned about it. The president's poll numbers are going down because increasing numbers of people disagree with particular policies of his, but the damage being done to the fundamental structure of this nation goes far beyond particular counterproductive policies.
