What is an Industry?

Companies in a sector can be filtered into subcategories called industries. Like sectors, industries are a group of businesses competing in the same sphere. They help contextualize how individual companies are faring against their peers.

Some businesses operate in industries that vastly differ from their parent sector, making industry peers a better comparison. For instance, Morningstar classifies the healthcare sector as super defensive, or having below-average volatility. However, within healthcare is the volatile biotechnology industry, containing companies quickly falling in and out of favor based on highly unpredictable drug trials. These businesses might perform much differently than their broader sector.
