NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. equity investors began the week on an optimistic, albeit cautious, note on Monday, with gains in broader markets led by defensive sectors such as consumer staples and utilities.
Texas Instruments shares rise on earnings beat
Texas Instruments Inc.(TXN)late Monday reported its third-quarter earnings rose to $826 million, or 76 cents a share, from $629 million, or 56 cents a share, a year earlier.
Billionaire investor Warren Buffett is on course to lose over $1 billion on IBM shares (IBM) Monday, after the disappointing third-quarter results and said it would transfer its semiconductor operations to Globalfoundries Inc. Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) is IBM's largest shareholder, with 70,173,978 shares as of the latest regulator filings, according to FactSet.
