NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- As consumers shift toward larger phones at the expense of small tablets, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) will win market share at Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) expense, International Data Corp. said in a report issued this week. The data tracker predicts Apple operating systems will have 30.6% of the tablet market in 2017, down from an estimated 35.0% this year and 45.6% last year. Windows should have 10.2% of the market in 2017, up from 3.4% in 2013 and 0.9% last year, it adds. Android's market share, which likely jumped to 60.8% this year from 52.0% last year, should slip to 58.8% in 2017, it said. Overall, worldwide tablet shipments should reach 221.3 million units this year, up 53.5% from last year but slightly less than an earlier IDC forecast. Annual growth, however, will slow sharply by 2017 as consumers favor larger phones over smaller tablets.
