Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT) said Monday it would still furlough 2,400 staff in the wake of federal facility closures and contract freezes as the partial U.S. government shutdown moved towards its second week.
The world's largest defense contractor by revenue said the bulk of the affected staff worked on civilian programs, having outlined plans Friday to idle 3,000 workers.
The Pentagon's decision over the weekend to start recalling most of the civilian staff furloughed last week had seen defense contractors start to dial back their own plans to send staff home.
The Department of Defense's decision will not eliminate the impact of the government shutdown on the company's employees and the business, Lockheed said in a statement Monday. Some 300 workers still left unable to work are tied to Pentagon contracts, with the rest on civil-agency programs.
Contractors have warned that tens of thousands of staff could be furloughed as the shutdown halts contract awards and payments, as well as key work by civilian Pentagon inspectors on existing programs such as Lockheed's F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and Black Hawk helicopters made by Sikorsky Aircraft.
Sikorsky and parent United Technologies Corp. (UTX) over the weekend cancelled all planned furloughs.
Boeing Co. (BA) and the U.S. arm of BAE Systems PLC (BA.LN) were among other large contractors considering furloughs.
