SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch)-- U.S. stocks posted broad gains Tuesday as a partial government shutdown removed an element of uncertainty that had dogged stocks in the prior two sessions. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) gained 62 points, or 0.4%, to 15,192. Merck & Co.(MRK) led the blue-chip average with a 2.4% gain after the pharmaceutical company announced lay-offs. The S&P 500 (SPX) gained 13 points, or 0.8%, to 1,695. Health-care led gains that included all 10 of the S&P 500's industry groups. Tuesday was the first day that a key element of the Obama Administration's contested health legislation went into effect. The Nasdaq Composite (RIXF) added 46 points, or 1.2%, to 3,818.
