SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Nike Inc. shares surged in the extended session Thursday after the sports-apparel maker's quarterly results easily topped Wall Street estimates.
Shares of Nike (NKE) jumped 6.1% to $74.60 in heavy volume.
The Beaverton, Ore.-based company reported fiscal first-quarter earnings of 86 cents a share on revenue of $6.97 billion. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected earnings of 78 cents a share on revenue of $6.96 billion.
Shares of smaller rival Under Armour Inc. (UA) were up 1.9% to $80.60 on light volume.
Accenture PLC (ACN) shares fell 4% to $72.85 in moderate volume after the consulting and outsourcing firm reported fiscal fourth-quarter earnings of $1.01 a share on net revenue of $7.09 billion and wider margins. Analysts expected $1.01 a share on revenue of $6.96 billion. The firm sees 2014 earnings of $4.42 to $4.54 a share, compared with the analyst consensus of $4.50 a share.
Shares of Nektar Therapeutics Inc. (NKTR) dropped more than 28% to $9.93 on heavy volume after the biotech's mid-stage clinical study for a knee-pain treatment failed to reach the study's primary endpoint.
J.C. Penney Co. (JCP) shares fell 5.5% to $9.85 on heavy volume after a report that the ailing retailer will be launching a secondary offering of 84 million shares.
