Washington Gas Energy Systems (WGES), a subsidiary of WGL, has been awarded the opportunity to win a portion of $7 billion under the Renewable Alternative Energy Power Production for the Department of Defense (DOD) installations Multiple Award Task Order Contracts, or MATOC. The company was identified by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as one of 22 qualified solar technology contractors.
Selected from a pool of over 114 candidates, WGES is now qualified to compete for future solar projects for any renewable energy initiatives issued under the contracts program. Through power purchase agreements, DOD installations will be able to procure abundant, renewable alternative energy.
“We thank the Department of Defense and the Army Corps of Engineers for this opportunity,” said Sanjiv Mahan, Vice President of Business Development for Washington Gas Energy Systems. “WGES looks forward to supporting the Army today and into the future, assisting them in reaching their Congressionally mandated sustainability goal of 25 percent production and consumption of energy from renewable energy sources over the next 12 years.
According to the Army Corps of Engineers, solar is the second of four technologies being awarded. The first being geothermal, awarded in the spring of 2013. Remaining technologies include wind and biomass, both of which will be awarded by the end of 2013.
