NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks turned lower on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 extending losses into a third session, after retail sales rose less than estimated in July.
A report released by the Commerce Department ahead of the open had retail sales rising 0.2% last month after a 0.6% gain in June that was larger than initially estimated.
"Consumers are still spending, although limited income growth appears to also be holding spending increases in check," Jim Baird, chief investment officer at Plante Moran Financial Advisors, wrote in emailed research.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) fell 62.59 points, or 0.4%, to 15,357.09, with insurer Travelers Cos. (TRV) pacing losses that included all but five of its 30 components.
The S&P 500 index (SPX) lost 5 points, or 0.3%, to 1,684.47, with telecommunications and consumer discretionary leading losses among its 10 major sectors.
The Nasdaq Composite (RIXF) declined 16.26 points, or 0.4%, to 3,653.71.
For every share rising, roughly three fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 98 million shares traded as of 10:10 a.m. Eastern.
Composite volume hit 449 million.
The dollar(DXY) gained against the currencies of major U.S. trading partners, including the yen (USDJPY) and the euro (EURUSD). The yield on the 10-year Treasury note (10_YEAR) rose 7 basis points to 2.694%.
The price of gold futures(GCZ3) fell $5.80, or 0.4%, to $1,328.40 an ounce and crude oil for September delivery was off 38 cents, or 0.4%, at $105.73 a barrel.
Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta President Dennis Lockhart is expected to talk about the economic outlook in an afternoon speech.
J.C. Penney Co. (JCP) retreated 3.2% after activist investor Bill Ackman resigned from the retailer's board, ending efforts to oust CEO Mike Ullman.
Yum Brands Inc. (YUM) declined 3% a day after the fast-food chain said sales in China fell last month.
