Mullarkey has been named plant manager – Fairfield Tubular Operations, part of United States Steel Tubular Products Inc., located near Birmingham, Ala. effective February 1, 2013.  Mullarkey will succeed Dennis Quirk who has retired following 36 years of service.

"Dennis has served our company well during times of critical change with his extensive and varied operations experiences in both our Tubular and Flat-Rolled organizations and has exhibited an extraordinary commitment to our safety program throughout his 36 year career. We wish him and his family all the best in his retirement," said Douglas R. Matthews, senior vice president – Tubular Operations.  He also commented on Mullarkey's advancement, stating, "Pat's broad operations experience throughout the company, particularly in the welded pipe business, coupled with his strong leadership skills makes him an excellent addition to the U. S. Steel Tubular Products leadership team."

Mullarkey, 55, began his career in the steel industry with Inland Steel in East Chicago, Ind., in 1981 and moved through a series of supervisory and management positions in the company's iron and steelmaking operations.  In 1994, he joined Raytheon Engineers & Constructors as the lead engineer for the blast furnace reline division and held that position until joining U. S. Steel in 2000.

A native of Chicago, Mullarkey graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.  He earned a master's degree in business administration from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind., in 2004.  Mullarkey, his wife, Carol, and their daughter will relocate to the Birmingham area.
