Who do you want to be 90 days from now? Would you like to be in the best physical shape of your life? Are you ready to up the ante on your professional skill sets and capabilities? Would you like to be working from a clean and clutter free office--an office that is organized and efficient? Are you ready to be dramatically more productive?
Now is the time to create a game plan for your 90-day make over!
This is a great time to ask yourself what I like to call "big life" questions:
* What was your life like yesterday?
* How did you feel when you woke up this morning?
* Do you have a deep understanding of your purpose in life?
* What drives you?
* Who will you choose to be 90 days from now?
* Why are you willing to work so hard?
* Are you happy?
If you want to be different tomorrow than you are today, YOU must CHOOSE to be different. If you are not completely satisfied with your professional or home life, then now is the time to draw a line in the sand and create a game plan for how you can be different.
The entire premise of my last book, The Seven Minute Difference: Small Steps to Big Changes--is that much of what we do in life can be done better if we take tiny steps forward every day. It is the "every day" part of this process that is so difficult for most people to embrace.
Here are several simple ideas that could change your life during the next 90 days:
1. Get rid of the mental and physical clutter that is holding you back in life.
The beginning of a new year is a great time to ask yourself, "What's bothering you?" It is very likely that there are several items that would easily appear on your "mental clutter" list. Mental clutter often includes: avoidance, procrastination, distraction and indecision. Mental clutter can be seen in disorganized work spaces, as highlighted by cluttered desks with stack upon stack of papers and untended to projects. But much mental clutter goes unseen and masquerades in life as hurt feelings and unresolved issues.
2. Decide to be in the best physical shape of your life.
There is simply no doubt that you will feel better about yourself if you will choose to exercise. How hard is it to walk for 30 minutes a day? (One of my friends walks on her treadmill for 10 minutes before she goes to work and for 20 minutes when she gets home from work.) How hard is it to download one of the multitude of smartphone apps to help you spend a few minutes a day getting into shape? (One of my favorites is the Nike Training Club--an amazing free app for the iPhone.) How hard is it to decide that now is the time for you to regain your strength and energy? This idea would also include making simple choices like drinking 60 ounces of water per day and choosing to get the proper amount of sleep.
3. Switch to Action From Intention
A recent Sunday school series by Andy Stanley was entirely based upon the thought, "It is the direction, not the intention, that determines your destination." Wow, how simple, yet how profound is that statement? For example, I live in the beautiful state of Arkansas; if I want to go to Florida--I had better head east. Every action you take will put you on a path heading a specific direction. For years you may have had good intentions. Now is the time to step out and begin to walk down the path of where you want to go.
4. Read Three Books
Something as simple as choosing to read 10 pages of a book a day can change your life. That is another great example of a simple step you can take toward becoming the person you have always said you wanted to become. If you read 10 pages per day, every 30 days you would have read 300 pages (10 pages per day for 30 days equals 300 pages per month). This would translate into one book per month. If you want to be a better leader, read about great leaders. If you want to be in better shape, read about fitness and energy. If you want to be inspired, read the biographies of some of the greatest men and women of all time.
5. Think. Write. Do.
From Proverbs to modern times it has been recognized that we become what we think about. Over the next few days, contemplate a few of the "big life" questions listed above. We encourage people to schedule a planning retreat once every 90 days. During this time (by yourself, or with your team) it is important to start by "thinking" about what you really want your life to look like 90 days from today. We encourage people to start writing down what is most important to them. You may find it helpful to write down your values (what is most important to you), to write down your purpose in life (how you will use your personal gifts and talents to serve the world--this is what drives us) and to write down your 90-day goals. The last and most important part about your 90-day make over is "doing" what you said you will do. What action will you take? What will you "do"?
At the first of every year most of us will feel a sense of excitement and opportunity. We feel as though we are starting fresh with a clean slate. We have a new found belief that this year will be THE year. I love the new year with all of its potential and possibility.
