The girlfriend of the Las Vegas shooter said she will cooperate with investigators, who see her as the key to understanding the motives behind one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history.
Marilou Danley said through her lawyer she returned to the U.S. voluntarily to help with the investigation, but she never witnessed anything that led her to believe that Stephen Paddock was preparing an attack that so far has resulted in 59 fatalities, including his own.
"I knew Stephen Paddock as a kind, caring, quiet man," Danley said in a statement read by Matthew Lombard, her lawyer. She added: "He never said anything to me or took any action that I was aware of that I understood in any way to be a warning that something horrible like this was going to happen."
Investigators questioned Danley, 62 years old, on Wednesday, a law-enforcement official said. President Donald Trump traveled to Las Vegas, visiting a hospital that was treating some of the injured.
