Weapons appear to be bought legally in four states

Stephen Paddock, the gunman who carried out Sunday's massacre in Las Vegas, rapidly built his arsenal of weapons, authorities said Wednesday.

Paddock bought 33 of the 47 weapons found in his hotel and homes since October 2016, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. He purchased the weapons at gun stores in Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Texas, according to a law-enforcement official. It doesn't appear that Paddock purchased the weapons illegally, multiple law enforcement officials said.

Authorities have been working to understand why Paddock, a 64-year-old retiree and avid gambler, brought two dozen of his firearms to the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, fired down on a crowd at a country-music festival and killed 58 people Sunday night.

The search for answers has put the focus on Paddock's girlfriend, Marilou Danley, who returned to the U.S. from Asia late Tuesday night. "I will cooperate fully with their investigation," Danley said in a statement read by her attorney, Matthew Lombard, following a meeting with authorities at a Federal Bureau of Investigation office in Los Angeles.
