The NBA is the first of the four major U.S. sports leagues to put ads on its jerseys
The NBA season starts early this year -- on Oct. 17 -- and for the first time, team jerseys will have an ad on them.
So far, 16 of the 30 teams in the league have announced who will be advertising on their jerseys. Perhaps not surprisingly, the team making the most from it is last year's champion, the Golden State Warriors.
The Warriors will get $20 million a year to put a Rakuten ad on the upper left chest of the jerseys, according to ESPN (http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/20680169/golden-state-warriors-sign-jersey-patch-advertising-deal-rakuten).
Rakuten isn't very well known in the U.S., but it is in Japan. An internet company based in Tokyo, Rakuten Ichiba is one of the largest e-commerce sites in the world. It also owns ebates and several other online entities.
"We want to be a household name like Google (GOOGL) and Facebook (FB) ," Rakuten founder and CEO Hiroshi Mikitani told ESPN. Rakuten had $7 billion in revenue in 2016.
