Morningstar's TakeA

During the last few years, Agilent continually has worked to restructure its business, with the goal of improving profitability. Actions taken include increasing the amount of manufacturing it outsources, as well as making compensation more variable in nature. As a result, operating margins and returns on invested capital improved each year from 2004 to 2008. The recent economic downturn made 2009 a difficult year for the company, but demand rebounded in 2010 and the company is again generating strong returns on invested capital. The restructured version of Agilent is now far less susceptible to swings in demand than it was a decade ago, and we expect the company to continue generating strong results during the next few years.
