The term used for all the securities owned by an individual, an institutional investor, or a mutual fund portfolio manager. An investment portfolio may contain a combination of different assets such as stocks, bonds, and other securities. The assets in an investment portfolio are usually selected to emphasize long term investing and thus they are managed passively – no active trading occurs.
