| Here's a new way to look at the stock market.
Based on the same methodology as the well-known Morningstar® Style Box, Morningstar has developed a family of 16 stock indexes that systematically covers the stock market. Taken together, this group of 16 indexes shows you at a glance what kinds of stocks are driving the market's performance. Are value stocks up? Or is it growth stocks? And how are small caps doing versus large caps?
In addition to the familiar nine-box Morningstar Style Box, you'll notice seven additional boxes running along the top and the left-hand side. In the top left corner is the U.S. Market Index, which summarizes how the entire stock market is performing. The three boxes along the top show how Value, Core, and Growth stocks are performing as a whole. Finally, running along the left-hand side are the three size indexes, showing how large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap stocks are performing. All of the indexes are cap-weighted, which means the larger the market value of the stock, the greater the weighting it has in the index.
